Subang, May 31: Gavin Kyle Green successfully defended his title in the MPI-Saujana Amateur Championship, holding off Aussie Oliver Goss to win by two strokes.
A closing round of 73 for a total of three-under-par 213 at Saujana’s Palm Course was sufficient for the 18-year-old US-based golfer to take the title.
Goss actually caught Gavin at the turn and took the lead with a birdie on the par four 11th hole as Gavin bogeyed to fall two behind. But three successive birdies by the Malaysian from Hole 13 saw him regain the lead and he finished in style with a 10-foot birdie on the par five 18th to claim his third MPI-Saujana Amateur Championship title.
This was Gavin’s second title in a row, coming just a week after he became the first Malaysian in 15 years to win the Malaysian Amateur Open.
“It feels really great to win this title for the third time,” said Gavin ,who will return to the United States next week to begin his sophomore year at the University of New Mexico. “My confidence level is high after winning last week and I manage my game much better now after playing collegiate golf.”
“The course is in great shape but is playing tough because of the difficult hole positions. I tried to miss it on the right side every time,” he added.
Third place went to Singapore’s Marc Ong on 218, edging Chieh-Po Lee of Taiwan on countback. Malaysia’s Arie Fauzi, who was in second spot after the second round, fell back into fifth spot on 222 after a cloisng 81.
